Antibürgerlich, anarchistisch und pazifistisch übte Dada mit scharfem Blick und beißender Satire Gesellschaftskritik, hinterfragte geltende Werte sowie politische und soziale Zustände und Dynamiken, vor allem jene, die zur Katastrophe des Ersten Weltkriegs geführt hatten. 1916 noch während des Krieges gegründet, wird das Ende der Bewegung zwar in den frühen 1920er Jahren verortet, Künstler:innen wie George Grosz, Hannah Höch und John Heartfield kämpften jedoch mit Mitteln der Kunst später auch gegen den aufkommenden Nationalsozialismus. Den Nationalsozialisten gilt Dada als „entartet“.

Die Kunst der Dadaist:innen ist bunt, laut – und keineswegs einheitlich. Sie bedienten sich unterschiedlichster Stile und produzierten Literatur, Lyrik, Bühnenstücke, Gemälde, Grafik, Collagen und Fotografien. Doch das Politische ist ein zentraler gemeinsamer Nenner, der sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Arbeiten der Bewegung zieht und auf verschiedenste und unerwartete Weisen zum Ausdruck kommt. Zum 110. Geburtstag feiert „Sperren Sie endlich Ihren Kopf auf!“ die Kunstbewegung Dada und zeigt die Aktualität ihres politischen Engagements.

Mit Werken unter anderem von Johannes Baader, Hugo Ball, Erwin Blumenfeld, Paul Citroen, Otto Dix, Otto Griebel, George Grosz, John Heartfield, Marta Hegemann, Emmy Hennings, Hannah Höch, Heinrich Hoerle, Richard Huelsenbeck, Franz Jung, Walter Mehring, Rudolf Schlichter, Kurt Schwitters, Sophie Taeuber-Arp.

Im Begleitprogramm tritt unter anderem am 31. Mai 2026 Rocko Shamoni auf. Der Musiker, Schriftsteller und Schauspieler spricht mit uns anlässlich der Ausstellung über Dada, Nonsense, Absurdität und Humor als Stil- und Kampfmittel in der Kunst. Die Veranstaltung findet in Kooperation mit dem Ox Fanzine statt.

Die Ausstellung wird von der Gerd-Kaimer-Bürgerstiftung Solingen, der Kunststiftung NRW und der Regionalen Kulturförderung des LVR gefördert.
