Nachruf auf Gertrude Stein

Mit großer Trauer haben wir vom Tod Gertrude Steins erfahren. Sie starb am 27. Februar 2026 mit 98 Jahren in New York. Mit ihr verlieren wir eine prägende Persönlichkeit der internationalen Kunstlandschaft, eine Wegbegleiterin der kritischen Avantgarde-Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts – und eine Zeitzeugin des letzten Jahrhunderts.
Gertrude Stein präsentierte in ihrer „Gallery Gertrude Stein“ in New York City schon Anfang der 1960er Positionen kritischer internationaler Kunst – darunter Werke von Boris Lurie, Balthus, Allan D’Arcangelo, Francis Picabia und Wolf Vostell. Gertrude Stein hat nach dem Tod ihres Freundes die Boris Lurie Art Foundation gegründet und mit außergewöhnlicher Energie bis zuletzt geleitet. Ihr Wirken war getragen von der Überzeugung, dass Kunst mehr sein kann als ästhetische Erfahrung: ein Ort der Auseinandersetzung und der Haltung. Sie verstand es, künstlerische Positionen konsequent zu unterstützen und zugleich die ethische Dimension von Kunst und Erinnerung sichtbar zu machen.
Im Januar 2020 durfte ich Gertrude Stein in New York für unsere Ausstellung im Deutschen Bundestag interviewen und mit ihr über gesellschaftliche Verantwortung und Boris Lurie reden. Das Gespräch hat mich tief beeindruckt.

Zudem war es für uns eine besondere Ehre, 2024 gemeinsam mit ihr, mit Rafael Vostell und mit Unterstützung der Boris Lurie Art Foundation eine große Ausstellung zum 100. Geburtstag von Boris Lurie in Venedig realisieren zu dürfen. In der Vorbereitung der Ausstellung haben wir mit Gertrude Stein ein ausführliches Gespräch über ihren Freund Boris Lurie aufnehmen können.
