Der Verein Max-Leven-Zentrum Solingen e.V. zeichnet mit der Ausstellung „… und laut zu sagen: Nein.“ die lokale Geschichte der NS-Zeit nach. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf dem Widerstand gegen das NS-System, seinen Formen, Strategien und Bedingungen, dem Wirken und Scheitern, sowie den Auswirkungen fehlenden Widerstands.

Neben dem vielfältigen Widerstand aus der Arbeiterbewegung gab es in Solingen auch christlichen Widerstand sowie Einzelpersonen, die sich unter Lebensgefahr für Verfolgte einsetzten. Nachdem dieser Widerstand größtenteils zerschlagen war, nahm die Verfolgung von jüdischen Menschen, Sinti, Menschen mit Behinderung und sogenannten „Asozialen“ ihren mörderischen Lauf. Auch die unmenschliche Behandlung von Zwangsarbeiter:innen und Kriegsgefangenen wird thematisiert, ebenso wie die Bombardierung Solingens, die Endphaseverbrechen und die Befreiung. Nach 1945 waren es unter anderem ehemalige Widerständler, die von den Alliierten mit der Organisation der Nachkriegsverwaltung betraut wurden.

Der Verein Max-Leven-Zentrum Solingen e.V. gründete sich im September 2019, um die Entwicklung einer Bildungs- und Gedenkstätte in Kooperation mit der Stadt Solingen als Trägerin voranzutreiben. Sie wird im Neubau der Hauptgeschäftsstelle der Stadt-Sparkasse Solingen am Standort der ehemaligen kommunistischen Tageszeitung Bergische Arbeiterstimme und Wohnort des Kulturkritiker Max Leven entstehen, der hier in der Pogromnacht 1938 ermordet wurde.
