The exhibition “In the Vortexes of Time” shows works from Gerhard Schneider’s collection that reflect Germany over the course of the last century at the Center for Persecuted Arts until February 11, 2024.

In the exhibition “In the Vortexes of Time” works of art from Gerhard Schneider's collection reflect the diverse challenges, changes and turning points that Germany has experienced over the course of the last century: from the First World War to the turmoil of the revolutionary period, through the Weimar Republic and the Nazi era up to the division and reunification of Germany. The works of art oscillate between personal concern and conscious documentation for posterity.

In terms of time, the exhibition covers the era sometimes referred to by historians (at least for Europe) as the “short century”; At the same time, it is considered the most terrible and bloodiest in human history, with at least 75 million deaths worldwide in the two world wars. During this time, Germany saw a revolution, two dictatorships, a division that lasted almost 45 years and finally a peaceful reunification that is unique in history to this day. The paintings and graphics on display begin with wartime expressionism and cover various stylistic developments throughout the 20th century.

The Gerhard Schneider Collection sought initial discovery from the outset and brings together achievements by unappreciated artists that are often overlooked to this day. This disregard goes back to distortions for which the Nazi dictatorship is specifically responsible. On the one hand, it saw the departure into modernity as a “degeneration” that was corrupting the imagined German national community (“Volksgemeinschaft“), and on the other hand, it persecuted all those who felt obliged to innovate in the understanding of art. The artists either went into exile, into “internal emigration” or died due to racist or political persecution. Even in the period after 1945 until reunification, the societies in the Federal Republic and the GDR offered sufficient opportunity to artistically deal with social structures, expectations and developments.

The exhibition takes place on the occasion of Dr. Gerhard Schneider's 85th birthday, who curated it largely independently. It will be on view at the Center for Persecuted Arts until February 11, 2024.

The opening will take place on November 12, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. in the Meistermannsaal of the Center for Persecuted Arts.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
