Boris Lurie exhibition takes place as part of the 60th Biennale

On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Venice had a successful and moving exhibition opening on the occasion of the 60th Art Biennale: “Life with the Dead” In the Historic Buildings of the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista, 55 works of art by Boris Lurie, who would have been one hundred years old in 2024. A special occasion that the Boris Lurie Art Foundation New York and the Museum Center for Persecuted Arts Gladly used to present the artist's work to an international public.

The opening ceremony began with a fascinating guided tour of the Scuola Grande, which gave guests an insight into the historic significance of the venue. Tabaro Angelo from Scuola Grande, Rafael Vostell, representative of Boris Lurie Art Foundation for Europe and Dr. Jürgen Joseph Kaumkötter, Director of Center for Persecuted Arts, then welcomed around 200 guests to the official opening ceremony in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista.

After a video greeting from Ina Brandes, Minister of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Joi Grieg from the Board of the Boris Lurie Art Foundation and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wilhelm, Chairman of Cologne Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation. They all emphasized the relevance of Boris Lurie's artistic work in times of growing anti-Semitism, racism and right-wing populism worldwide. The Holocaust Survivor shows the suffering of Jews, which marked his life forever, but also how a society threatens to forget the crime against humanity through superficial consumption, seduction through pornography and perversion of power.

As co-founder of NO! artMovement Boris Lurie created various, provocative and sometimes extreme collages, drawings, sculptures and texts. His works, however, are not only an expression of suffering. They are symbols of the hope of one of the few survivors. The Spazio Badoer, next to the San Giovanni church, is a perfect location for this exhibition. The Room Was Once Used as a Burial Place, and Above the Door Was the Word coemeterium (Burial Place). It is a place of eternity and resurrection.

Among the guests at the opening ceremony were Delfina Jałowik from Bunkier Sztuki Krakow, Maria Anna Potocka from MOCAK Krakow and former Minister of State Sylvia Löhrmann, President of the Friends of the Center for Persecuted Arts. The list of those present also included well-known architects, personalities of Venetian society, museum directors and authors such as René Block and Eckhart Gillen from Berlin as well as Thomas Heyden and Simone Schimpf from the Neues Museum Nuremberg.

After the official opening, Press Representatives had the opportunity to meet Kathrin Luz and Jürgen Kaumkötter to learn more about the exhibition and record their impressions.

The evening culminated in an exquisite after-show dinner at the Casa Cappellari restaurant, where guests could exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere and celebrate the success of the exhibition. With an impressive mix of art, culture and conviviality, the opening of Boris Lurie's exhibition was a lively event full of moving moments.

The exhibition “Life with the Dead” can be seen until November 24, 2024, Tuesday—Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Published by Hatje Cantz A catalog appeared.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
