Music by persecuted composers from exile

After the highly acclaimed performance of Erwin Schulhoff's jazz oratorio “H.M.S. Royal Oak” As part of the “Musica non Grata” project in December 2022, the ensemble brought EchoSpore from the Cologne University of Music and Dance under the direction of Florence Millet on December 3, 2023 Musicians from Royal College of Music in London and the Ensemble Emigré under the direction of Prof. Norbert Meyn with ins Center for Persecuted Arts, to present composers who fled Germany from National Socialist persecution and found a new home in England.

Sarah Yang (violin) and Yu-Chin Ho (piano) kicked off with pieces by Maria Herz (1878—1950). Born in Cologne, she was one of the few women who made a career as a composer in the first half of the 20th century. Driven to flee as a Jew after the National Socialists came to power, she was no longer able to build on her successes in exile. Two banners provided information about the life of the German musician who presented the mobile exhibition “Music, Migration and Mobility” added from London. The multi-year research project of Royal College of Music focused on the contribution of migrants to the history of music in Great Britain. Many visitors took advantage of the concert break to look at topics such as Journeys, Opera and Education, but also Humour and comics.

Simon Brown (tenor) and Archie Bonham (piano) presented works by composers Fritz Berend, Mátyás Seiber, Joseph Horovitz and Hans Gál. In his compositions, the latter dealt with the stay in the internment camp on the Isle of Wight, which Jewish refugees also had to endure as Germans. With a humorous look, he put himself in the thoughts of a seagull that couldn't make sense of the barbed wire that suddenly grew on the island.

Norbert Meyn (tenor) and Christopher Gould (piano) also dedicated themselves to songs by Berend and Horovitz, but also Robert Kahn and the one who died in 2004 Peter Gellhorn, whom Norbert Meyn met personally and about which he produced a documentary as part of his research.

Michael Foyle (violin) and Florence Millet (piano) impressed with the Suite in G Minor Op. 38 for violin and piano by Adolf Busch and the Sonata for violin and piano No 2 in A minor by Robert Kahn.

Albert Herz, grandson of composer Maria Herz, who had travelled from Zurich, had the last word of the evening. His wish was that the works of musicians, whose careers were broken as a result of persecution during the Nazi era, be brought back into the middle of current music events and receive the attention that would be due to artistic quality.

The event was supported by the Deutsche Bank Foundation and the Lichterfeld Foundation.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
