The museum Center for Persecuted Arts Shows until September 8 the Exhibition “No freedom without freedom of the press”. The occasion is the 30th anniversary of the German section of Reporters Without Borders. Zur Opening on May 4, 2024 were next to the curator Barbara Stauss, photo book editor-in-chief Gemma Pörzgen and the new managing director of Reporters Without Borders, Anja Osterhaus, including the photographers Miguel Angel Sanchez and Nuria Teson, Anoek Steketee as well as Violetta Savchits present. Around 100 visitors experienced an impressive plea for press freedom, both in word and image.
After being welcomed by Director Dr. Jürgen Kaumkötter and thanks to the Center's Sponsors for initiating the exhibition, Lord Mayor spoke Tim Kurzbach about everyone's responsibility to work for freedom, democracy and respectful cooperation. He referred to recent attacks against politicians and a climate of fear and intimidation that continues to spread among us as well. Falk Dornseifer spoke as a representative of the LVR and emphasized the importance of the center for dealing with current issues as well.
Anja Osterhaus tackled the task of Reporters Without Borders one to create publicity, especially in crisis areas, even though this could only rarely achieve a substantial improvement and the latest report on the global situation of press freedom is worrying. In the subsequent round of talks, which Gemma Pörzgen moderated, the four photographers reflected on their reports, some of them dating back several years, and how their work opportunities and the situation in the respective countries have developed since then. Sylvia Löhrmann emphasized that a free press is an indispensable prerequisite for our democracy and Uli Preuß recalled iconic photographs that are etched into our collective memory and, in one case or another, have moved a piece of history.
On the evening of May 6, there was Violetta Savchits an exclusive guided tour for readers of our media partner, the Solinger Tageblatt. The photographer from Belarus is now living in exile in Lithuania and reported how the peaceful demonstrations against the rigged election of ruler Lukashenko in 2020 were brutally suppressed and even taking a cell phone photo can now lead to jail. She herself was also arrested at that time, but released again. During a scholarship abroad, she decided that it was too dangerous for her to return to Belarus.
