Obituary for Anita Beckers

The gallerist Anita Beckers has passed away. I met her about twenty years ago when she represented the artist Sigalit Landau. Since then, she has accompanied me on my journey—not in constant proximity, but with unwavering reliability. We met at art fairs, exhibition openings, had conversations on the phone, or wrote to each other. She gave me advice for which I was always grateful.
Through Anita, I met artists like Teresa Diehl and Cornelia Renz—and many more. She never wanted to "just place someone." Her manner was pleasantly unobtrusive and characterized by genuine interest. Anita was delighted when collaborations were successful. She offered support without ever being one-sided—it was always a partnership.
I remember cheerful evenings in Frankfurt, Prague, and Krakow. The melody of her voice—not a singsong, but something that came directly from her heart—remains with me. With that same heart, she also saw: she could distinguish quality from triviality and sometimes say with disarming honesty, "She's great" or "He's awful." But this was never empty praise or mere gossip, but always stemmed from a clear, heartfelt judgment.
With her death, the world becomes poorer and the art world colder.
